Water Safety Campaign – City of Newcastle

The City of Newcastle’s Water Safety Campaign serves as an example of how organizations can engage with multicultural communities by addressing specific safety concerns and providing resources in multiple languages.

This document is a case study about the City of Newcastle’s Water Safety Campaign. The campaign was designed to address water safety concerns for international visitors and newly arrived migrants in the Newcastle region. The campaign involved the creation of flyers translated into Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic, which were distributed to universities, schools, language centers, and multicultural centers. These three languages were chosen based on advice from the Multicultural Centre. Online content in 10 other languages was also planned.

Organizations can use this case study as a model to engage multicultural communities by:

  • Identifying safety concerns that may be specific to members of the community. The City of Newcastle identified water safety as an area where international visitors and newly arrived migrants might not have the same understanding as long-term Australian residents. Organizations can similarly identify areas where cultural differences or lack of familiarity with local practices could lead to safety concerns.
  • Creating resources in multiple languages to meet the needs of diverse communities. The City of Newcastle translated flyers into multiple languages to ensure that critical water safety information was accessible to a wider audience. Organizations can adopt similar approaches when developing materials and resources for multicultural communities.
  • Collaborating with community organizations that serve diverse populations. The City of Newcastle partnered with organizations such as the University of Newcastle, schools, the Newcastle Language Centre, and the Multicultural Educational Centre to distribute water safety flyers. Partnering with these organizations allowed them to reach a broader and more targeted audience. Organizations can use this as a model to identify and collaborate with relevant community organizations that have established relationships with diverse communities.
