One Parramatta – All Together Now

The One Parramatta project demonstrates the effectiveness of using personal narratives, community partnerships, and creative communication formats to promote positive social change and engage multicultural communities in conversations about diversity and inclusion.

This document is a case study about the One Parramatta project, an initiative established in 2012 by All Together Now. The project focused on reducing interpersonal racism in the Parramatta local government area by engaging young adults between the ages of 18 and 25. The project utilized interviews with community members to spark self-reflection on personal values, racism, and the benefits of cultural diversity. These interviews were edited into short vox pop episodes and screened at a local cinema for a year. The project successfully increased awareness of racism and diversity, with nearly 46,500 locals watching the films and 100% of surveyed viewers remembering key messages.

Organizations can use this case study as a model to engage multicultural communities by:

  • Using storytelling and personal narratives to spark reflection on diversity and inclusion. The One Parramatta project effectively used personal interviews to prompt viewers to think about their own experiences and perspectives. Organizations can similarly use storytelling as a powerful tool to connect with diverse audiences and encourage meaningful dialogue around these important issues.
  • Partnering with local organizations and venues to reach a wider audience. Collaborating with the local cinema significantly broadened the reach and impact of the One Parramatta project. Organizations can replicate this strategy by identifying and partnering with community organizations, cultural centers, or other venues frequented by diverse communities to expand the reach of their initiatives.
  • Employing creative and accessible formats to deliver messages about cultural diversity. The use of short, engaging vox pop episodes screened at the cinema proved to be an effective way to convey messages about racism and cultural diversity to a broad audience. Organizations can explore similar innovative approaches to disseminating information, utilizing formats that are culturally relevant and easily accessible to diverse communities.
